It’s really a slap in the face to most of us gamers to go to retail and come back with what would seem to be an incomplete game. Is a bottom line really that important that delaying the master copy going to print to fix a few bugs should be shrugged as “Meh, we’ll patch it later”? If it was me, I’d certainly want to save both my own and my company’s hassle by pushing release back to fix stuff instead of getting thousands of forum-goers baying for blood complaining that so-and-so doesn’t work or whatever.
Obviously your likes of the EAs and Activisions aren’t going to care a lot, being “franchise companies” of sorts, and are probably even getting paid for website hits and love people coming in to complain as it means even more money, I’d rather have that for praise on a job well done than a “You’re doing it wrong”. It’s why I love smaller developers that care about their games and care about their fanbase, they want their customers to have the best possible experience of their product and they’ll take a portion of time aside to fix any problems that consumers might be having.
