Demon's Souls

Demon’s Souls is a dungeon-crawl hack-and-slash real-time RPG (is there such a genre?), much akin perhaps to Dark Cloud on the PS2, if anyone remembers that. The premise of the story is, some whack-job king (who also happened to be a channeller of sorts) accidentally summoned some sort of crazed demon god and said demon proceeded to cast a fog over the kingdom that makes everyone batshit insane and bloodthirsty. Right, absurd story out of the way, time to see how crazy that sounds after you have a controller in your hand.

Yeah, I sure did. Anyone wanting to follow me on it, feel free to do so at https://twitter.com/jayc4life. So I was online yesterday evening, seeing what was happening in the lives of the renowned gaming people and what they were up to (in search of a scoop of sorts :P) and I got this little nugget right here from Cliff Bleszinski, designer of such games as Jazz Jackrabbit, Unreal Tournament and Gears of War.

You know what Cliffy? I accept your challenge. Somehow. It will take me a while to make. It will make me re-learn Flash (something I’d intended on doing over the course of the next few months anyway) but by God I will do it. Perhaps not alone but I will.

Well with it being the post-season in terms of gaming, with it being after Christmas and all (or pre-season if you’ve seen Q1’s strength this year) I figured I might as well clue you guys up as to what I have planned for the next week or 2.

This week should see me finishing up a piece I’m putting together about Dwarf Fortress, a freeware strategy game by Bay 12 Games, and if it isn’t done this week, next week should see a review of Demon’s Souls, GameSpot.com’s 2009 Game Of The Year, which, incidentally, isn’t available in stores in Europe, but you can import and play it so long as you have a high-definition TV, seeing as the PAL TV frequencies here don’t match up to the NTSC equivalent in America, meaning if you’re on your old box, this is going to be all in black and white. And I’ve tried to play this game in black and white. Trust me, you really don’t want to.

If I should stumble on anything else noteworthy, you’ll certainly see it here. But at this time of the year, unless someone buys me Bayonetta so I can have a go at it, I wouldn’t bet on it.

Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan is one of the quirkier DS titles available on the market. Some of you may have heard of it. Most of you (if you’ve ever been to GameStop, which I’ll assume that as gamers, you have) will have seen on shelves its Westernised cousin, Elite Beat Agents. And those of you that played and loved it are probably wondering when there’ll be a sequel coming out. Well, the answer is… I don’t know. I haven’t a clue. But as long as you have Osu!, you won’t need to know.   (more…)

As you may or may not have heard, Ad-Hoc Party came out in Europe on the 22nd of December, just before Christmas. It was out in America a few months before that, and Japan a few before that again. Ad-Hoc Party is a great tool that allows you to play your PSP online using your PS3’s internet connection (as long as it’s using an Ethernet cable and not wi-fi). After about a week of good use (consisting entirely of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite), I think I’m about ready to give my thoughts on the system. (more…)
